Kikkerland Trade Show Counters

I fabricated these two counters for Kikkerland’s 2012 trade shows. They both have lightbox faces made out of acrylic covered with adhesive vinyl. The client wanted the acrylic to go all the way to the edge of the counter, so the plastic was applied before the laminate, and then the laminate was applied over the edge. One of the counters has a top design to hold a computer. I built these counters for Abunch LLC.

Bread Clip Lamp

This lamp was made for a “found object” lamp project. The base is made from some oak that I found on the street, and the stem is the plastic part of a dried-out marker. I needed to get the bread clips through mail order, since I couldn’t eat so much bread!

Candy Television

At first I tried making this breakaway glass TV screen out of expensive plastic casting materials, but to keep things within our budget I switched to a sugar-glass recipe.

I made a silicone rubber mold of the actual TV screen, so that the mold could be carefully flexed away from the screen without cracking. The super-hot melted sugar and corn syrup mixture was poured into the mold and spread evenly onto the form until it cooled.

The best benefit of candy glass over plastic breakaway glass was that instead of needing to wear a respirator, I could eat the casting material! Also, I was surprised that the candy glass could be carefully sanded and painted… though it did deform over time, so it needed to be used within a day or two.

Jason Singleton built the pneumatic punching mechanism, and Dario Gimenez modified the TV’s wooden cabinet.

Bent Plywood Chair

I did some ergonomic research before I started this chair, so it actually ended up being pretty comfortable. The seat and back are made out of bent plywood, and the frame is ash with wedged through-tenon joints.

RTA Nightstand

This nightstand is assembled with RTA fasteners so that it can be disassembled for shipping.

Footstool

This footstool was made with some rolled expanded metal lashed to a square-stock steel frame (which gave the seat some springiness.)
